Do you love the outdoors? The adrenaline rush of a downhill sprint or the quiet bliss of a morning kayak on an alpine lake? If yes, Hakuba is the place for you.
Below are 9 of our favorite summer adventure activities in the Hakuba Valley.
Mountain Biking
Hakuba’s Iwatake Resort has a full mountain bike course with terrain suitable for beginners in addition to courses designed for expert riders. The longest run is 6,900 meters in length and has an elevation gap of 521 meters.
Soar above the valley and experience Hakuba from a bird’s eye view. Tandem paragliding rides leave daily from Happo One resort and cost ¥14,000. No experience is necessary and flights last for 10-15 minutes. The price of the gondola is included in the fee.
Enjoy an incredible Hakuba sunrise from the best vantage point in town, a Lion Adventures’ hot air balloon. The tours begin at 5:00 and 6:00 AM respectively and only operate during the green season. The balloon ride is a nice experience for the entire family and quite tame overall.
NOTE* 12 participants needed for a flight to operate
River Rafting
Several rivers run from the Japanese Alps, through the various villages of Hakuba on their way to the Sea of Japan. The Matsukawa and Himekawa Rivers are excellent places for picnics, walks, barbecues, swimming and river sports. Lion Adventure has several tour options including river rafting, river tubing tours, shower walking and more. The below information is for the 3 hour Himekawa River Rafting Tour. Check out the link for more information on the other tours.
Hakuba has several excellent mountain lakes perfect for picnicking, barbecuing, swimming, and sporting. You’ll need a car or bicycle to visit as the lakes are about 10k from Happo One.
Several tour companies offer tours for kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, and wakeboarding. You can also rent the equipment and forgo the lessons.
August in Hakuba is hot. The best place to spend an afternoon is at Lake Aoki. Black Bear offers wake boarding tours, wake boarding lessons, and banana boat rides. You can rent a boat with up to 5 of your friends for ¥30,000 for 2.5 hours, and this rate comes with a driver.
Hikers will feel right at home in the Japanese Alps. There are a seemingly endless number of hikes, many accessible right from Happo Village. The most popular hike is to Happo Ike (pictured above). It takes approximately 90 minutes from the top chair lift.
There are several adventure parks in Hakuba and the largest and most popular is Wow Hakuba at Tsugaike Resort. Here you can rock climb, swim, complete obstacle courses and ride a hire wire bicycle course.
